THAT TUDM JET ENGINE THEFT FIASCO

Someone wrote this on Susan Loone's blog:

Najib’s talk about making a police report and passing the files to the AG for action exposes a glaring point about his intentions to take action or inaction. The PDRM and AG can only act against civilians, local or foreign, who were involved in the theft. Uniformed officers in the service at the time are subject to Military Law, even if they have been cashiered since then.
Military courts are under the Judge Advocate General of the Malaysian Armed forces, the Gujerati AG has no authority over them.
There has been NO Court Martial of the officers and enlisted men involved.
...
There’s a lot more to Engine-gate than meets the eye … its not entirely improbable that Najis or someone very high up is involved right to his eyebrows.

Now I don't know if the above is true or not, but from my own knowledge based on the American system, that is true.

The fighter plane engine belongs to the military, the thieves are from the military, hence it is a military affair.

IGP has no power over the military, as far as I know, unless the military personnel committed an offense that causes injury / loss / death of a civilian.

Please check if the above allegation is true or not.

ANOTHER OF THE TUN MAMAK'S WAY OF SQUANDERING THE RAKYATS

Let me tellyou the real story regarding indah water. This so call indah water project is given to Dr M crony company. The bill to approve waste water collection project was introduce by Dr Ting chew Peh of MCA in the parliment. BN approve this waste water collection bill in Parliment with DAP against such bill. LKS oppose such bill but because of their number of MPs in Parliment, they could not oppose this daylight robbery bill. Finally this severage water bill was approve by BN robbers. You can verify all these happenings in parliment from all BN robbers and DAP as well. That company in fact receive a soft loan from Govt and started to take over the severage system from all the state govt in Malaysia.
All these so call Indah waste water started from Dr. M. He should be blame fro all these daylight robbery and all of you can verify from him. In fact in the next GE, PR should address this issue and cancell away this daylight robbery issue should they be able to form the next federal govt.

May I know who is this idiot who allow these thieves to capitalize on our faeces and in turn send monthly payment bills to our households without even our permission?

Well! The culprit is none other than Mahathir Mohamed. the 4th PM. You should skin him alive.

"May I know who is this idiot who allow these thieves to capitalize on our faeces and in turn send monthly payment bills to our households without even our permission?"
Well try Ong KT, a former minister. Let's get this straight. First of all, the sewerage infrastructure of all property development is provided by the developer, that include the sewerage treament plant. IWK will then inherate this facilities free of charge, and proceed to operate and maintain them for a fees. But such sewerage fees are cover previously in the assessment charged by all municipalities. Out of no where, the great Ong KT put in a piratisation scheme for this monopoly to charge the citizens for this service without reducing the assessment from the municipalities. This is yetr another monopoly fiasco created by those stupid UMNO/BN government and politicians to burden the citizens without logic.

Dear Vincent,
The Chi Bye who hetched this idea to rob the people was of course Maha Tahi and his crony Vincet Tan. You see Maha Tahi got this idea from the "Tahi" itself. His shit head was thinking how to turn shit into money at the peoples' expense. . .! And voila! We have Indahwater vis a vis, the shit and gambling company which topples the rightfully elected Perak state government!

I think we have had enough of this Maha Tahi?

Tun Dr Mahathir ...

Anyone who become PM for 22 years also can build those KLIA, Twin tower,Penang Bridge and others ..

KLIA - Poor planning, did accomodate for future. Airasia cannot go in have to build another airport .. so far for KL .. the train so expensive ...

Twin Tower- What the usage spending so much money on this, from what i see only used for people to take photo. tell me what the function?

LRT - If not mistaken based on info in the internet , total bailout from our tax payer money exceeding billion. Why build something that need to bail out at last ..

Penang Bridge, PLUS and other highways - What is so proud of building this highways? Remember malaysian need to pay tol using this and it is not free. The toll fees always increase and burden the people. Why need to privatised, gov no money to build these for the people?

Proton/Modenas - we all know lots of money loss to these useless companies .. selling modenas for 1 Euro ..

All I can say , after so many years you rule as PM , our transportation sucks, car prices so high due to AP , pay toll here and there, tnb and telekom and streamx keep monopoly the market .. and many more ..

If Tun Dr M so proud of the these , go and have a ride on the public transportation .. take it ride for 1 month .. experience urself and felt the pain of the rakyat ..

Tun,

Your comments here are quite contradictory to what you had been practicing during your rule as the Prime Minister of Malaysia. If you really wanted to have transparency in the government administration, why did you make a decision to have the Official Secrets Act been passed in Parliament when you were the Prime Minister?

Tun, I think you really owe us an explanation unless you agree that you are but an opportunist of double standards, with which the decision will be made based on a particular situation, depending on whether the wind is blowing to your pleasurable direction or blowing against you!

As a Singaporean Malay, I disagree that Singapore is likened to be a Zimbabwe.

Minorities are given free education, subsidised food for school children such as the Milk Programme where children are given milk daily to promote health awareness, housing is taken care of, country is safe for my children, police is citizen-friendly unlike in Malaysia where police constantly beat up suspects and those under custody leading to deaths, roads are clean, city is clean, public transport is efficient, government agencies are efficient and effective, corruption is very very low and almost zilch, all my 3 children went to the local University with no issues in admission (entrants based on meritocracy) and they have good jobs in MNCs, my children speak perfect English, plus many more. No taxi driver has ever sent passengers to a jungle area, tie them up and rape or loot their personal effects.

In short, I am happy with the quality of life and living standard in Singapore. The key is the environment is safe for raising a family BUT not in Malaysia. Innocent citizens are constantly hauled up for no reason except being asked for kopi money or to be tortured unnecessarily in the lockup. We can eat and buy whatever we want here. Me and my family never felt like we are 2nd class here. In fact, we feel we are being treated with exception – free education and schooling years of my children. WE live in harmony with other races here.

Can Malaysia match up?

Malaysia is living in the 18th century, no progress in terms of mentality and citizen welfare.

So, Singapore is progressing well and manage to attract high inflow of FDI and it is ranked the world’s number 3 in terms of the best place for expatriates to work.

How about Malaysia? Even I am afraid to get into Johor. Many of my SIngaporean friends, even Malays, are robbed and cars scratched and a couple even got beaten in Genting by the bodyguards of one VIP! This is horrendous….Malaysia is filled with criminals and boasts of crime. Even Anita Sarawak & husband got a taste of crime a while back. Her Mat Salleh husband was slashed in broad daylight!! Mat Rempits are rampant and no women dare to carry shoulder bags. What freedom is this?

Even said. Our taxpayers money is well spent.

Jet engine theft mystery deepens — The Malaysian Insider

Jet engine theft mystery deepens — The Malaysian Insider

DEC 25 — The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) has now said a brigadier-general and several others sacked in 2007 have nothing to do with the embarrassing theft of two F-5E jet engines found only missing in 2008.

That makes sense.

After all, how can they be sacked before the theft was discovered?

But there precious little sense and details of the theft that has put international spotlight on Malaysia’s lax security, possible role in the global black market arms trade and corruption that has put the country at 56 in the Transparency International graft rankings.

The police are now saying the engines — the General Electric J85-21A turbojets — have been traced to Argentina. It apparently went there by way of a Middle-East nation, believed to be Iran, from Port Klang. And police are now looking for the documentation for the shipping.

No one has yet shed light how the thieves sneaked the engines, the size of a small car, out of the RMAF Sungei Besi airbase, to the port. It is also not known why the engines, said to be spares, are kept in Sungei Besi when the F-5E squadron is based in the RMAF Butterworth airbase.

The greater mystery is why would anyone want to acquire jet engines first made 30 years ago? No one has yet to reveal the answer to that, especially when the RMAF has the F/A-18Ds and the MiG-29Ns using far superior powerplants made with better technology.

For the record, Malaysia bought the 14 F-5Es in 1974 and decommissioned them in 1999. One crashed in the Malacca Strait near Perak on May 31, 1995. There are 13 now but only six are operational after they came back to service in 2003.

Selling the jet engines to Iran also does not make sense as the Islamic republic has 65 F-5 of the A, B, E and F variants, according to Wikipedia. The United States had sold them to Iran in the 1970s when the Shah was in power before being toppled in 1979.

Why would Iran want technology for a jet engine it already possesses? All the more so when its an engine made in the 1970s. Iran already has scientists said to be working on military-capable nuclear technology, so this jet engine technology is obsolete for it.

Of course, the languid response to the theft and an apparent lack of outrage when it was first discovered is shocking. And a mystery.

The RMAF lodged a report after six months of finding the engines missing. The police took a glacial pace of more than a year to investigate before sending the papers to the Attorney-General’s Chambers. And he is only now saying it is a “serious matter” after it finally became public, asking the police to probe further.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who was the then Defence Minister, never revealed it. Neither did the Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Why? The mystery deepens.

We have two jet engines stolen two years ago from a secure military installation. They are allegedly now in Argentina.

We appear to know the what, where and when. It is the who, why and how that is missing, somewhat like the engines.

The mystery is just getting curiouser by the day, for the more we know, the less we understand this crime that underscores the public perception of the Malaysian government and the civil service.

A comprehensive audit should be done on the Armed forces assets. Somebody with the rank of Minister of Defence must be made responsible for writing off obsolete assets and see that these are disposed off according to strict procedure so that these do not fall in the hands of terrorists and arm smugglers.

A case of "pot calling the kettle black". Mahathir claims that during his time of 22 years, Petronas paid the government RM126 billion but during Pak Lah's 5 years, Petronas paid the government a total of RM270 billion. Any inflationary factors considered? However, Mahathir fails to detail how both he and Pak Lah used up the monies. Wasn't the Mahathir's government broke at one time, and were compelled to get monies from Daim Zainuddin to pay public servants' wages, and inturn Daim received lucrative plots at Jln Cochrane quarters and the rest of those areas. Any accountability? Mahathir, you will burn in hell for all your lusts and quests, all ill-gotten. You ingat kita semua Maha-bodoh kah?

Good to know that the Bapa Rasuah Malaysia has admitted with regards to his involvement in some of the significant losses suffered by the country. But what about his role in Perwaja, in the bailout of his son's shipping company using taxpayers' money, the failed Multi-Media Corridor; the PetronasTwin Tower white elephant? I also believe he is the ultimate mover in the PKFZ scandal, just as in the Lingam's case, if only we have a competent AG, and one who has not been politically-compromised.

He introduced negotiated tender for all his projects to rob through exorbitant mark-ups at the expense of the taxpayers. At the same time, he introduced OSA to hide details of these contracts from public scrutiny by the very taxpayers who financed these projects as if the money belonged to him. Why didn't he continue with the open tender system and be transparent by opening up all records during his time or have a Freedom of Information Act during his 22 years? Why the need to classify and declassify records that belong to the people? Only crooks need to hide.

Some people have double standards. On the one hand they want democracy and free speech, condemn their leaders and everything else, but on the other hand they dismiss a very Undemocratic , very very undemocratic country as a first world country and as such no corruption means no problem, be undemocratic, police state and you go to jail for even throwing a piece of paper on the road. I can't help but laugh at the customs when they dived into my console box in my car and grabbed my chewing gum, and proudly confiscated it, with a job well done on their faces. Which part is Mahatir wrong ? What he said is true, go on prove him wrong. And about Singapore, I bet my life, Barry Wain will never, never write anything about their " Incorruptible Leaders " Least he wants to be bankrupt. Just so you know, a very famous opposition leader in Singapore, spent donkey years getting out of bankruptcy, and died few months later. So I challenge all of you, prove Mahatir wrong, don't just talk.

I agree with PM Moey. Let's also not forget Putrajaya. Talk about a white elephant! And the money we are now spending lighting it up every night -- a virtual ghost town. Who's going to see it? Why does Mahathir ask Wain to write about Singapore? It's totally irrelevant. It's Mahathir's usual tactic of diverting from the real issue, which in this case is the RM100 billion issue. Mahathir is a master at such diversion -- as well as blaming other people. And having a selective memory. I ask you all, which past PM has been so publicly reviled while still alive? What does it tell you about the man?

How can we have a lop-sided toll concession with the UMNO-linked contractors that every single person that drives on Malaysian road has to pay toll fees for 30 years? In one instance on Kajang-Cheras toll highway, the collection in 3 years is already enough to pay for the cost of construction. Yet we still have to pay toll fee for another 27 years. Even my daughter still have to pay for the toll years after my time is up to meet the Creator. Her children may still have to pay for the tolled road that they use before the contract expires. This is how terrible we are in Malaysia.

His modus operandi to rob through inflated project contracts was to give a Letter of Award to a crony who had no track record whatsoever which price included 20%, 30% or even 100% markup for a so called 'UMNO FUND'. The sub contractor who is the one with the qualifications and expertise will receive this markup thro the MOBILISATION PAYMENT released by the Government upfront before the contract is carried out. No audit or examination by an independent party is done on the costing. The markup is remitted to either the local company bank account of the crony or to an overseas bank account. This man will not reveal all the dirt whereby the bigger the contracts awarded the richer they became at the expense of the rakyat. Priority areas were neglected. It was projects, projects, projects. Ever wonder why during his time there were so many overseas trips by him and his 'ENTOURAGE' of cronies/ contractors who went on so-called ' foreign investment trips' also at the rakyat' expense.

Mahathir is up to his old tricks again, first trying to divert the attention trying to find faults at Badawi and now he asks the writer why not write on Singapore leaders! But Mahathir, don't you realise that what we are interested to know now is not what other people do, but rather, what have you got to say about the RM100 billion that the writer alleged that your actions had cost the nation! I believe you must have read his book, so please answer them squarely and don't bring in any other issues which we are not interested to know.

MALAYSIAN MAVERICK TO SUE

'Dr M, sue but let it be an independent court'
Dec 24, 09 7:14am
'Never be threatened by this old war horse. George Soros had put it correctly during the crisis of 1998 - Mahathir, ‘you are a menace to your country'.'

Dr M threatens to sue Mkini, Kit Siang, Wain

RubyStar: Never be threatened by this old war horse. His method is to be on the crude offensive to frighten his nemeses or his perceived enemies. He has plundered the country for 22 years and the sorry state of affairs in the judiciary, society and economy of Malaysia will take at least two generations to unwind.

Go and sue the whole world. George Soros had put it correctly during the crisis of 1998 - Dr Mahathir Mohamad, ‘you are a menace to your country'.

SusahKes: As Dirty Harry once said, 'Go ahead. Make my day'. So Mahathir, I believe many Malaysians would also say, 'Go ahead; make our day'. Sue all you like.

The VK Lingam mess alone is enough to nail you but as it is, attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail don't even have the guts to issue the fiat. Sue - but let it be in an independent court.

File your suit in a Hong Kong or London because most of the Malaysian judges owe you a favour anyway. Everyone of my veins are crying out for you to be accountable for the RM100 billion you milked.

And don't try to ‘tai chi' by dragging in former PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi - you answer for your own sins; he'll answer for his.

Dr Suresh Kumar: Look how shrewd and cunning this man is. How cleverly he manipulates and plays around with words as though the people are some kind of imbeciles.

Only now does this man wants to open the Pandora's box when he knew about the misuse of Petronas' funds to the tune of RM270 billion during Pak Lah's reign. We are talking about not thousands or millions but billions of our money, the people's money.

The fact that only now is he exposing the RM270 billion theft by the Umnoputras speaks volume of his integrity as a former PM. He is sending out a strong message to BN/Umnoputras and that is - ‘If you take any action against me, I will make sure all of you go down with me'.

I say to you Mahathir, the RM100 billion is only the tip of the iceberg. You and Umno not only bled the nation but also destroyed the societal harmony by continuously playing the race card with impunity to cover up all these scandals for the past 52 years.

SRR: I am disappointed with Mahathir but I understand his emotional state though I don't support his reaction. He was one of the people I looked up to but now I see him acting just like his enemies.

Anyway, if I was him and if I have nothing to hide, I would tell the press that I will do everything I can in order to prove my innocence.

I would not even demand for an apology. I would not sue anyone either. Threatening freedom of speech and expression by suing and whatnot is not the right way to go. I have more respect for people who are humble and fair. I don't believe in "teaching people a lesson" in this manner.

KayKay: Mahathir has the right to sue. These days people sue left and right at the drop of a hat. What he should do is admit that he made, not some mistakes, but many mistakes.

He's carrying on as if he didn't squander any of the nation's wealth on harebrained schemes. The problem with our society these days is that people don't have a sense of shame.

It was Mahathir himself who ticked off the Malays for not having a sense of shame, scrounging off the nation (taking loans and not repaying them). Mahathir, of course, didn't practise what he preached.

X'roy: How about adding S Samy Vellu, Ling Liong Sik, and Daim Zainuddin to the list. It should be an open inquiry to look into all the allegations that his sons were given unfair advantages in business.

‘Che Det' seems to be saying that he is not the only guilty one. And, of course, the judges will also have to include foreign ones not from Sri Lanka, Singapore or Zimbabwe but from the UK, Canada, India and New Zealand.

Nil: The former PM should provide documents to counter the allegations instead of defending himself with threats to sue, an often-used Umno tactic.

Sentinel: What's the point of a royal commission of inquiry if people testify there with selective memories and keep saying ‘I cannot remember'?

Anyway, the results and recommendations of such commissions are not respected. Just look at the royal commission on the VK Lingam case. Malaysia is now a lawless country, worse than Zimbabwe.

A Disgusted Malaysian: ‘I reserve the right to sue'. Why just reserve the right? Sue straightaway! As any man who is innocent would do so immediately.

And as for ‘I will cooperate fully with the commission', no doubt there will be with your usual selective memory loss.

Under BN rule, a lot of 'things' went missing, we have had Bala, and the three Perak ADUNs before this. The worst was hundred of billion went missing (squandered) under Mahathir's rule and not to mention how Government over spent/paid items at the expense of the tax payers' money. So 50 million ringgit engine went missing is just a small drop in the ocean of corruption as far as BN is concerned.

IT'S NOT JUST A JET OR TWO JET ENGINES - JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG ACCORDING TO ARM FORCES CHIEF

Capt
Dear dear dear All,

O.K. guys, pick your choice !!??…its about time, we indeed see proper justice in our country yaa…!!.

… To hang them for “TREASON ” using – A. Common Law or B. To chop their head off using Islamic Law??. Since PM,PDRM and PAT have all agreed on it too that the offence fall under treason.

,,,Prime Minister Najib Razak Monday vowed there would be no cover-up in the investigation.

,,,Police have arrested four individuals, including the buyer, the seller and airforce personnel who assisted in stealing the engine.

,,,Armed forces chief Azizan Ariffin said the theft was only the “tip of the iceberg” after an audit revealed millions of ringgit worth of equipment was missing, the New Straits Times reported. Azizan said those found guilty of stealing and selling the engines should be charged with treason.

“Their act jeopardises national security. They are traitors and should be punished for treason,” he said.

A. In Malaysia, it is treason to commit offences against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s person, waging, attempting to wage war or abetting the waging of war against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, a Ruler or Yang di-Pertua Negeri. All these offences are punishable by hanging, which derives from the English treason acts (a former British colony, Malaysia’s legal system is based on English common law).

B. According to the Quran the prescribed punishment ranged from imprisonment to the severing of limbs and the death penalty depending on the severity of the crime, however even in cases of treason the repentance of a person would have to be taken into account. Many Islamic theologians believe that the death penalty is acceptable punishment for treason and other “mischief in the land”.

YES,,,,,I rather go for the hanging, less bloody I guess ?.

Is the General going to jail or just asked to retired with full pension! What kind of a deal is this? Why not jailed, without pension, or maybe he knows a lot of other shit which he can reveal if he is jailed,, in an open court, he can say things we do not know, which others desperate enough to want it to be sealed and tightly shut – THE BIGGER CAN OF WORMS !

Should think for a moment why ONLY now!
If they were afraid of the elections in 2007…they could have just shut their mouths and close the case and just fire all those involved after all, the evidence was there all along…nobody would have known about it. At least the general public is concerned!

Only the guys in uniform would know about it!

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ON MAHATHIR

By zaq25 on December 18, 2009 8:38 PM
You come back here!

--

I have done my ‘homework’ and boy are you so caught red-handed this time!!!

--

…and done even think of giving it back to me as being extremist and obsessive!

--

I have conducted a simply survey in various forums centered around American and European audiences and found that almost NONE OF THE RESPONDANTS HAVE EVEN HEARD OF YOUR NAME!! (only ONE miserable joker knows you in her words “simply as the Prime Minister of Msia for 22 years”. Simply as that! You’ve just blown 22 years!!!

--

Why America? Well it’s not a matter of eastern or western but about aiming at the bull’s-eye in this case the “Capital of the world” and not the peripherals like YOU DO!

--

6 years has come and gone since your retirement and not a single word or press coverage has been uttered about you (only a meekly 300 or so on GOOGLE NEWS – Obama has 200,000).

--

Michael Jackson just had a “super funeral” watched by 1 billion citizens of the earth i.e. one fifth of the globe. Mandela recently celebrated his 91th birthday with a sellout concert feted by hundreds of HOLLYWOOD stars and singers including Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys and Aretha Franklin. Lee Kuan Yew has just received an ASEAN LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.

--

Where’s YOUR ASEAN LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD? You have no excuse for ASEAN (level) man! Are you not after all one of the many little ASEAN STRONGMAN???

--

Whilst accepting that award Lee Kuan Yew also met with Obama and appeared on CHARLIE ROSE for the 3RD TIME on an HOUR’S SPECIAL. That makes it 3 hours. Remember Charlie Rose? You only appeared once for a miserable half an hour, and that was also during the height of the Anwar crisis. That was ten years ago. That video is still on Google videos if you’re still interested.

--

By the way, how’s Chirac? Has he called you? In case you didn’t know he just came out with his memoirs (can you believe it, Chirac dared to write his own memoirs?? That big zero!!) Is your name in it? How many pages? How many lines? He made friends with you simply because of his obsession with Asia, nothing else. And when he invited you to witnessed the French National Day you were the second person invited; the first was Nelson Mandela. You are always second!

--

Obviously you don’t stand next to Mandela! (you did exactly that in that Stadium Negara rally) He is a giant of a man (you said so yourself). He will easily blow you away. And indeed you were.

--

Don’t fight back and defend yourself with that remote, once-in-a-lifetime, 2-part HISTORY CHANNEL documentary aired recently. Firstly, that was just History Channel ASIA, which is based HERE in Malaysia and is liaisoned with some Msian producer or something. The very Msians who produced 3R (your daughter’s show) and Kopitiam PULLED STRINGS and are behind it. It was in the Star. I know. Ask Marina. Besides, History Channel ASIA merely talks about small regional Asian history like yourself. The main one in the US is the big one with Julius Caesar, the Pharoahs, the Empires, World Wars, and all that.

--

‘Great!’

Now Julius Caesar, Einstein, Churchill, Shakespeare, Gandhi and Mandela will go down the road in history as the greatest people alive ever, a universal icon, and an international statesman; while you, if ever even vaguely remembered so, will simply be recalled as a little ASEAN DICTATOR, miserable JAGUH KAMPONG TERPENCIL and the LEAST of the great men starting from Jesus Christ; like your bloody friend Suharto@!!!

Peace!

U/BN SIMPLY CANNOT REFORM ONE - JUST LIKE ZIMBABWE (as what the Prof said)

'M'sia is Zimbabwe by another name'
Hazlan Zakaria | Dec 20, 09 1:32pm

Without mincing his words, political analyst Abdul Aziz Bari likened those who hold the reins of power in Malaysia to a bunch of 'thugs'.

According to him, these individuals do as they please without proper regard for the law of the land and the percepts laid down in the federal constitution.

"We are like Zimbabwe, just with another name!" stressed the law expert.

Zimbabwe under President Robert Mugabe has earned international infamy over it's questionable policies and use of the legal system and laws to prop up the government.

Elaborating, Abdul Aziz said: "I don't know how else to call them, sometimes we need to call a spade, a spade. What we have is a state of lawlessness, it's like the law of the jungle."

He pointed to the recent overturning of the high court decision regarding the Malaysian Anti Corruption Agency's (MACC) right to interrogate beyond office hours as a glaring example.

"It is painful to hear the court of appeal decision. They are using the provision to overrule the high court, saying it is silent on the matter," he told Malaysiakini.

'Judiciary takes its cue from government'

According to the UIA law professor, the court of appeal's recent decision "is a lame decision and in itself a failure to carry out the court's role, namely to fill the gap left by parliament in the statute."

Abdul Aziz is adamant that "the high court decision is to be preferred as it is closer to justice and the spirit of the constitution."

"It is for the court to fill the gap by making a decision that is closer to fairness and justice," he added, though he bemoaned that in Malaysia, "the judiciary takes its cue from the government."

"When you have a judiciary like what we have, what can we do? In normal circumstances you go to court to compel the parties who refuse to do its legal duty to do it. But not in our case," he said.

What is worse, according to Abdul Aziz, Barisan Nasional is "undermining or simply could not care less about the constitution."

"BN has demonstrated complete disregard for the rule of law and supremacy of the constitution, either the letter or the spirit of it," he said.

Abdul Aziz contends that the Reid Commission's original intent was to propagate federalism, this he said permeates through the entirety of the constitution with the express delineation of powers to the state and the federal government.

On a micro scale, he added, this framework of federalism included the issue of the petroleum royalties and funding for states.

Umno warlords stumbling block to change

Abdul Aziz believes that the BN government is clearly going against the constitution when it set up the JPP (Federal Development Department) which is ultra vires of the defined rights of the states.

He explained that the state has rights to certain grants and funding the federal government sans such 'intermediaries'.

The use of the Emergency Ordinance to define territorial waters in the Kelantan oil royalty issue, he said, is another example of the BN government’s disregard for the law.

"Why not refer to the Petroleum Act or the Law of The Sea?" he asked.

In a similar vein, he also criticised the federal government's 'play acting' in making much ado when giving assistance and aid during natural disasters to opposition held states,

"Why the furore, it is their duty anyway, as described in the constitution," he said.

According to Abdul Aziz, this rot of lawlessness goes right down to BN’s core which is Umno.

He is of the opinion that the Umno warlords cannot be reformed and as long as they exists, Umno cannot be reformed.

"They simply don't want to do it," he said.

NO WONDER MAHATHIR IS GOOD FRIEND OF MUGABE - NO DOUBT ABOUT IT - THAT GOES WITHOUT SAYING - THEY'VE BEEN IN CLOSE ASSOCIATION THUS FAR - BIRDS OF A FEATHER!

by magnus - 16 minutes ago
Syabas! But if we are talking about spades here, let’s also say that it is more than painful for us who respect the Law and the ideal of Justice legal principles seek to serve for humanity as a whole to see that respected church of reason being twisted and maligned into an asinine laughing stock there. A Constitution, like a mission statement, is always silent on minutiae for it is always about the BIG human stuff, the stuff that brings individuals together and makes them labour hard to give birth to a united, interdependent sovereign people and independent nation. The filler minutiae is expected to be interpreted correctly by those learned bigwigs sitting on those key operational rule of law Benches. We say if you pay peanuts always, you’ll get monkeys to ruin your business. So if you put spineless, unprincipled folk on those Benches, you’ll get kangaroo courts that turn your Law into an untrustworthy Ass and ruin Justice for all. It's what we call the Law of Action & Reaction.

Hey AR, you must be an UMNO as with 5 credits you got full scholarship!! There are smarter people than you who didnt get any scholarship! He (Abdul Aziz) is correct in saying that as long UMNO is on rule they will never change! Self-centered and power mongering is what UMNO stands for. Arrogant too I must add.

by AR - 40 minutes ago
This guy is probably a PKR stooge. There is no denying the fact NEP has helped numerous Malays to uplift themselves and credit should be given to UMNO for implementing that policy. I myself would have never had the opportunity to get a university degree if NEP was not there to assist me. I just obtained 5 credits in SPM but luckily for me, I was provided a full government scholarship for a business degree in the US. I was shut out of many local institutions because I did not get a credit in Bahasa Malaysia. I am a government officer now and I fully support the notion of Malay supremacy. Many of my colleagues share the same view. I will make sure NEP will be there for my kids, they will have the same opportunities i did. I don't really care about Chinese and Indians. The Chinese will always make money by cheating people with their disingenuous business practices and the Indians, ah well who cares. Everyone knows their place in this country if not, remember May 13.

Mahathir probably brought it in. Mugabe is his good friend. I have been saying this on many of my post. Thanks for the re-discovery.

by charles chia kwang dong - 3 hours ago
Bet you just wait and see when our oil and gas depleted and no more easy money to steal and UMNO losing its grip on the nation power like LDL (Japan) then all will see the real colour of UMNO warlords. Perhaps, we are not there yet but i am sure Malaysia will slowly but surely becoming like Zimbabwe or worse.

wira. Well said. If an appelate court keeps sending down its judgement not in accordance with the spirit of common sense and fairplay, then what use is it in the judiciary system? Put it in another way, as someone in this forum has argued, we may as well do away with the high courts since they often find themselves at loggerheads with the appellate court. What one sees is the erosion of public confidence in our judiciary institution.

by Lee Heng Soon - 4 hours ago
We have to accept that people are different and see thing differently. Similarly we have bloggers that think differently from us. Some people are borned criminals and some people are borned just. Statistically nature always produces living things that will result in a bell-shaped phenomenal. As a Chinese saying goes: When a scholar meets a soldier, he cannot be engaged in reasons with you. The moral is the soldier is just not bright enough to understand the issue because what he has is brute force not intelligence. We have some soldiers amongst us.

by PAK UBU - 4 hours ago
Abdul Aziz Bari is part of Malaysian academia. He's a law professor at UIA. But every time he makes a public statement it comes across as clear, cogent and courageous. Aziz Bari tells it like it is. And his is a sharp legal mind that cuts through all the layers of styrofoam filler that passes for substance amongst many would-be Malaysian intellectuals, especially the ones aligned with Umno. Thank heaven we have such a bold and brilliant man in our midst whose voices dispels darkness and doubt, and whose very words transmute fear and frustration into collective outrage and indignation.

....AND MAHATHIR IS ROBERT MUGAMBEEE BY ANOTHER NAME.

by P.Dev Anand Pillai - 27 minutes ago
This is the kind of mettle that Malay intellectuals should be made of. Here is a University professor who does not minus his words, unlike some who form the backroom puppeteers for the BTN programme which is nothing but state organised indoctrination. If you lead a nation to aquire knowledge, you will never need to indoctrinate to get support. By your actions and deeds, the people will throw their support for the cause that you uphold. What the learned professor says is nothing but the truth, that is why it is so hard to accept. We need a revolution, a revolution that will stop this rot and start afresh, we trusted the judges and they have failed us miserably, so it is now in the hands of the people. We must make this change.

by moontime - 41 minutes ago
Well said Prof! We are indeed similar to Zimbabwe except that there's no runaway inflation/mass starvation/genocide. We have two sets of people in Malaysia: One group seeks progress and their motto is Keep Moving Forward. The other prefers to maintain the status quo and their motto is: Why rock the boat? We have seen time and again how BN manipulated the Appeals court in their favour so that things remain as they are. Face the truth BN! You're afraid of change. Remember the quote by the Joker in The Dark Knight movie? "This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object". You are the immovable object and one day the unstoppable force will overrun you. Pakatan Rakyat WILL one day take over the Federal Government. It's not a matter of "if" but "when."

by cheers - an hour ago
UMNO polticians like to compare m'sia with Ghana (Africa) because Ghana gained independence around the same time like m'sia and always claim m'sia performed better. However, they never ever mention Zimbabwe. Is Zimbabwe better than m'sia or "serupa jer"? UMNO-BN always like to benchmark m'sia against african countries. This is called inferiority complex or fake justification for commiting crime! haha

by wira - 2 hours ago
The appellate court usually does not overrule the judgment of the high court on the point of facts. So if an overrule is allowed, it is usually done on a technical point, inconsistency to past rulings or inconsistency to a higher law, eg. the constitution. Nowadays, the appellate court is making its own weird interpretations of the law to appease the ruling party and these interpretations form the basis of future references which deviate from earlier intentions of the legislature and the common law. Most importantly, they are against common sense and fair play. The longer this goes on, the more corrupt our judicial system will be. We need to get rid of BN to stop this rot !

by X'roy - 3 hours ago
A classic comment, just as what I have said, the integrity of this nation has been compromised by a Prime Minister who refuses to clear his name on allegations that he was either, directly or indirectly involved it the murder of Altantuya Shaaribu. Pieces of evidence including an alleged sms from him to the Razak Baginda involving the case have surfaced without the PM making any effort to clear his name. Tun Mahathir Mohammed refuses to bring that into play, Najib is a convenient PM for him he can use Najib to do what he wants and Najib has no option but to allow him to dictate the game plan. yes these are a bunch of hoodlums with scant regard for the law or the constitution. The PM himself is now nothing but a lame duck, as far as anyone who knows his connections in the case, and that includes, the AG, Police Chief, MACC and the judiciary, now does that explain why we are worse then Zimbabwe?

by kgan - 4 hours ago
I wonder if the Umno judges are aware that every time they come out with a kangaroo judgement for Umno, they whack the credibility of the BN govt hard and turn more fence-sitters away from BN? The next election will be won by fence-sitters as only 6% swing will enable either side to win. Hey, you can't have your cake and eat it too!

by Nicholas Lim Ming Xhin - 5 hours ago
And Abdul Aziz Bari hits the nail on the head once again. First with PAS, now with UMNO. I am impressed. BN supporters will regret the day Malaysia turn into a Zimbabwe where laws and regulations are used to coerce the population and protect the interests of the elites. Specifically speaking towards Chinese and Indian and Sabahan and Sarawakian BN supporters. UMNO is the root cause of racism and corruption in the country, which has unfortunately infected the whole country after 52 years of UMNO's grip on power. UMNO trying to reform (via its NKRA initiative) is a laudable move but laughable in the face of government inaction against its own warlords and racial supremacists. If the BN supporters truly love Malaysia and truly love the multi-cultural coalition called Barisan Nasional, then it is in everyone's best interest that BN is ousted from federal power in the next elections. This will give room and space for reformers to push out the warlords and reform UMNO and reform BN. Agree?

by Multi Racial - 5 hours ago
Abdul Aziz, I salute you for having the courage to speak up. In Malaysia, we have many smart people but most use it to take care of themselves but not the country. Malaysia needs more like yourself to speak out to general public. Majority were "blinded" especially when the government control media only disseminate government agenda. The conduct of court of appeal is over turning so many high court decision lately have brought shame to the country. There are only a few brave judges who willing to do the right things right. I am sure there are also many in the government services are unhappy with the works of their colleagues especially those corrupted colleagues. Do sometime about it. Expose them. This country needs good people to take the lead.

"Never mind BN will rule, you all are jealous" - Fair. Yes we are jealous that they have so much ill-gotten wealth, who wouldn't? You are so funny lar. Malaysia is what it is because of the hard work and tolerance of its population, not due to the kindness of UMNO and certainly not due to the hardwork of the UMNOPutras! Or MCAPutras if what happened to Tekala and Transmile or MICPutas if what happened to MAIKA is any indication. But what do I know? It is all thanks to the hardwork, sacrifice, industriousness, entrepreneurial skills of the BNPutras that Malaysia is so great! Thank you Barisan Nasional. Lawlessness says Fair? Were you even living in Kuala Lumpur on May 13 1969? Did you see the cow head demonstration and the subsequent lawlessness in the Shah Alam town hall meeting? Whatever happened to N9 MB RM10 million wire transfer overseas? Yes BN is so full of law abiding citizens.

THAT'S WHAT MALAYSIANS ARE

written by imanj, December 20, 2009 17:39:12

Whoever wrote this report is as dense as the many so called Malaysian who think their are apt to be apart of a descriptive world..

Where in Malaysia developers consider naming their projcets with exotic names, often co-relating to Heights,Lagoons,Paradise,Parks,Gardens,Highlands,Luxury
Living with no clue to the actual meaning and worst of all categorising flats as apartments and apartments as condominiums, not forgetting how they misuse the meaning of detached houses/bungalows,so it really doesn't surprise anyone who has better understanding of luxury and how other countries catergories residences, facilities, living and most of all the level cost of living from simple to luxury...

What do you expect, have you not come across on television the inefficient translations of programmes to the Bahasa Malaysia? Till today, the word 'priceless' is mis-translated to 'tidak bernilai' and like the above article,it is 'priceless' in the English sense if RPK is in Gloucester,Bayswater,London and certainly where one is iliterate in their description on housing in another country,it would be just another 'tidak bernilai' story on the loose...

So Pete,I wish you and your family an awesome joyful Christmas...My hubby is on a plane heading towards London and he says weather reports snow, one of my favourite things,Make snow angles for my little girl, drink egg-nog and keep warm by the fire-place.Make this Christmas a little wonder for all good Malaysians especially the Christians who celebrate it with its true meaning...I will imagine being there too, just to get away from the drafty/dispicable Malaysian atmosphere for one day...

NO FURTHER ACTIONS ON THE REAL CULPRIT

Why action against money changers only?
Dec 18, 09 8:20am

'What surprises me is that Bank Negara and the police seem more keen to go after these money changers rather than investigate those using their services.'

RM600k 'wired illegally' to Rosmah in Dubai

Lusiapa: This is indeed a very serious allegation made by an honourable member of parliament and must be taken very seriously by all relevant authorities. It should not be treated as another piece of sensationalism created by the opposition for the purpose of seeking cheap publicity.

This piece of news from Malaysiakini, though shocking, is not altogether surprising or unexpected. It is common knowledge that numerous similar incidents of illegal funds transfers involving top government officials have been going on for a long time.

Sadly not a word was mentioned by the local mainstream media, hence the rot has reached such an embarrassing state today where even the wife of the PM is accused of being a beneficiary of such alleged criminal activity.

Mr Prime Minister, are you going to keep quiet again? Surely you can't brush this off as a frivolous matter. The nation is waiting.

KC Me: What surprises me is that BNM (Bank Negara Malaysia) and the police seem more keen to go after these money changers rather than investigate or charge those using their services. I am sure the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) will be very keen on this information.

Has anyone ever question how a Negeri Sembilan MB can allegedly transfer RM10 million out of the country? Where did he get so much excess money?

Amaso: All monies that are remitted to overseas illegally and secretly are ill-gotten wealth. If Bank Negara, MACC and the police don't do anything now, I foresee there will be more such remittances as next general election approaches. Their money is safer there just in case BN loses in the election and Pakatan Rakyat comes into power and freeze their wealth.

Louis: This is George Orwell's ‘Animal Farm' at its best - some are created more equal than others. For a small man, sending a few thousand ringgit overseas invites tons of queries from banks and sending chills down the poor sender's spine. But those well-connected can send millions overseas to buy properties without a care for the law.

Worst still, when this dubious act is discovered, they get away scot-free while the money lenders are left to face the music. Why can't Bank Negara come down hard on those culprits? Are they really more equal than us, mere mortals?

If Rosmah has committed an offence, please do charge her. If the Negeri Sembilan MB had done the same thing, charge him too.

Malayamuda: Tian Chua is going to go missing soon!

Geronimo: Najib will say that this allegation is frivolous, while Rosmah will say she has no time to entertain such wild allegations. That's it folks. Case closed.

MALAYSIAN MAVERICK - INDIAN ORIGIN

written by Semuaok, December 16, 2009 14:27:37

Sorry RPK wrong topic but interesting

Malaysian Maverick: Mahathir Mohamad in Turbulent Times Review

Mahathir may well have wasted or burned up as much as RM100 billion

Mahathir, to attempt to rescue Bumiputra Malaysia Finance in the early 1980s which turned into what at the time was the world’s biggest banking scandal.

He allowed those around him to pillage the national treasury almost at will, which carried over into Umno after he had left office and which blights the country to this day.

Dr Mahathir’s decision to direct the ruling party into business in a major way while the government practiced affirmative action, changed the nature of the party and accelerated the spread of corruption. One manifestation was the eruption of successive financial scandals, massive by any standards, which nevertheless left Dr Mahathir unfazed and unapologetic.

Mahathir must bear the blame for much of this, in particular his destruction of an independent judiciary

Mahathir continued display a public antipathy on general principles at the Americans while his jungle was crawling with US troops quietly training for jungle warfare.
He has presented himself as a bundle of contradictions: a Malay champion who was the Malays’ fiercest critic and an ally of Chinese.

The disdain of his fellow Malays (Mahathir’s parentage is partly Indian Muslim on his father’s side), especially the Malay royalty.

The last paragraph (bold face) is the most interesting. Read it a few times if you don’t get it. Now I start to understand why Malay, UMNO and Malaysia are in such a bad shape.

Mahathew it’s about time you show your real face and Mati Sake Party is looking for a Indian leader.

ORIGIN OF THE MALAYS

Chipmunk:

The Malays originated in Yunnan, China. They Proto-Malays were also known as Jakun. They were seafaring people. Probably because of their seafaring way of life or trading, they were believed to have lived in coastal Borneo.

They then expanded into Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. A Portuguese historian, Godinho de Eredia, referred to the Malays as Saletes (Orang Selat, or People of the Straits). Hindu influence on Malay culture is historically very great.

A large number of the Malays were Hindus before they were converted to Islam in the 15th century. So Zaini, who is the ‘keling'?

P/S: Other than the Orang Asli, everybody else in Malaysia is also a DK-something (Darah Keturunan - something).

They are either ‘Darah Keturunan Cina, Indonesia (Java, Aceh, etc), Thailand, Burma, Philippines, English, Dutch, Portugese, Japan, Arab.

A commentator has pointed out that ‘Melayu' means ‘runaways' in the Javanese language. Thus all of who originated from another locality are Melayu in Malaysia.

TALKING ABOUT BAHASA MELAYU - FUCK THEM ALL UMNO POLITICIANS

written by Rainbowseahorse, December 09, 2009 20:16:51

Come to think of it, if UMNO government is so bloody proud of the Malay language, how how they do not show this in the world's arena?

They should deliver speeches in BM like the leaders from China, Russia, Japan, Korea, and other countries who chose to do so because they are proud to be who they are. On the other hand, our UMNO government are arrogant as fuk in Malaysia with regards to BM, but with a bad case of inferiority complex to the rest of the world by speaking in English.

Could it be there are no reliable translators available? Or is it a simple case of superiority at home but a bloody coward on the world stage??

This is all the more reasons to recruit Green Peace, Human Rights Movement, and other world bodies to put out bloody leaders to shame wherever they go.

Mahathir is of Indian origin. Though the caste system has been outlawed in India, it is still very much in his DNA. The caste system drove many of the untouchable caste in India to Islam and Christianity, as these religions expound the equality of man, i.e. that no one is supreme to the other. i.e. no caste. These untouchables converted to Islam and Christianity to get out of the cycle of their hopeless untouchable caste state. But alas, once in the Malay Peninsula, they see the cunning of applying race to create a new form of caste system to grab for themselves power and wealth. Their race would be the master race, like Hitler’s Aryan race and the rest classified as subservient to the master race. The master race is a racist concept. This concept is contrary to the nature of a true Malay and a true Muslim. So the need for Mahathir to create the BTN in 1981 to brainwash the true Malay and the true Muslim to embrace master race concept, the Ketuanan Melayu.

by KayKay - 3 hours ago
Mahathir is coming across as more & more pathetic with his self-serving statements. He doesn’t believe in the maxim that when in Rome, do as the Romans do. He wants everyone to dance to his tune after the people of India threw off the yoke of Muslim rule, He’s consumed by the same hatred that bedevils Hindu-Muslim relations in India & trots out his racist theories so that his kind of people, the Malays of Indian origin & other Muslims who are not natives of this land, can lord it over everybody. He should be rightly described as the Racist Father of Makan Atas Angin Umnoputra gov’t development project scams designed to loot the Treasury of the people’s sweat. That’s where the missing US 100 billion, mentioned by Barry Wain in his book, went. Mahathir has left behind a race of lazy, good-for-nothing parasites & leeches made up of Malays of Indian origin & other Muslims who are not natives. He wants these people to form a high caste to lord it over all of us.

In all honesty that is what he is, "The father of racism." he has always been one, he managed to hide it during his years in office, now that he is trying to groom his son from behind the scenes he's back at it, that is his forte, and he'll use it to benefit his son. this man lacks morals, he lacks courage he hides behind a veil of deceit. Is he not the man who fixed the judiciary for his own purposes?

This year, BHL, as he's known, met with the usual klieg lights and controversy after issuing an impolitic apologia for fugitive director Roman Polanski, tweaking Barack Obama for being soft on the Palestinians, and telling European critics of the United States they have much to learn from across-the-pond successes. He also continues to engage in a serious examination of the unmooring of left-wing ideals and obsolescence of left-wing parties in Europe. In 2008's Left in Dark Times, he argued that leftists (particularly in France) abandoned their egalitarian ideals for a toxic knee-jerk hatred of capitalism, the United States, Israel, and Jews -- a hatred that's driven them blindly into enemy-of-my-enemy associations with unsavory figures like Saddam Hussein. It's a powerful, damning argument.

32. Anwar Ibrahim

for challenging the Muslim world to embrace democracy.

Opposition leader | People's Justice Party | Malaysia

Two decades ago, it would have been impossible to imagine Anwar pulling together rural Malays, ethnic Indians and Chinese, and Islamists into a coherent political bloc. Back then, Anwar was deputy prime minister in a de facto single-party state that espoused preferential treatment for ethnic Malays. It was a policy that Anwar had pushed from his days as a youth leader right up until 1997, when he denounced his patron, then-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, for corruption. He would spend the next six years in solitary confinement on trumped-up charges for that political betrayal. And he would leave jail in 2004 with a bold message for change in a country now at the forefront of the struggle for democracy in the Muslim world. Today, Anwar's political career is blossoming, despite a new, politically motivated indictment. Abroad, he has become an outspoken advocate of religious tolerance.

He sat down with Foreign Policy to talk about his big ideas:

On Muslim countries and the West: You can't just erase a period of imperialism and colonialism. You can't erase the fault lines, the bad policies, the failed policies, the war in Iraq, and support for dictators. That to me is the reality. But what is the problem? When you … apportion the blame only to the West or the United States. They want to deflect from the issue of repression, endemic corruption, and destruction of the institutions of governance.

On his time in prison: I spent a lot of time reading. I decided to focus on the great works and the classics. Friends from around the world were sending books, but it takes months for [the prison] to vet them. There came a book on the Green Revolution at that time. The officer said, "Anything revolution -- out!" even though it was about agriculture. But the books kept coming. The officers were not even graduates, and [the books] were in English. They would say, "Anwar, out of 10 books, can you send back one?" So I would select something I had already read or something I was not interested in and say, "We should reject this."

On politics: Of course, you simplify the arguments [for politics], but the central thesis remains constant. People say, "Anwar, you are opportunistic. How can you talk about Islam and the Quran here, and then you talk about Shakespeare and quote Jefferson or Edmund Burke?" I say, it depends on the audience. You can't talk about Edmund Burke in some remote village in Afghanistan. Then you go to Kuala Lumpur and you quote T.S. Eliot. If I quote the Quran all the time to a group of lawyers, [they will think] I am a mullah from somewhere!

33. Robert Zoellick and Dominique Strauss-Kahn

for using the crisis in service of a good cause: helping the world's poor.

President, World Bank | Washington // managing director, International Monetary Fund | Washington

Zoellick and Strauss-Kahn have led the world's banks through what has surely been one of their most pivotal years. Just months before the Wall Street crash, the two institutions were verging on irrelevance. But after the world plunged into recession, Strauss-Kahn positioned the IMF as the world's go-to lender of last resort and won the support of the G-20 summit.

As the IMF was bailing out such countries as Latvia and Ukraine and getting flexible credit lines to the likes of Colombia and Mexico, Zoellick's more development-minded World Bank was warning that almost 100 million people would be driven into poverty by the crisis. Though Zoellick is a free-trader and Strauss-Kahn a French socialist, both are on the same page when it comes to involving emerging markets more intimately in the decision-making and direction of the financial institutions. Together, they pushed for, and got, reform -- not just within countries, but at the international level, where they created a broader role for developing countries, envisioning a post-crisis world that will be truly multipolar.

Robert Zoellick:

Best idea: Broadening global economic governance beyond the G-7.

Worst idea: That the global economic crisis is over. It's far from over -- especially in the developing world, where more than 90 million more people will be trapped in extreme poverty and tens of millions more people will be out of work.

34. John Holdren and Steven Chu

for putting cutting-edge science back into power.

white house science czar | Washington // Energy Secretary | physicist | Washington

George W. Bush wasn't known for his love of science. In the Obama age, however, the scientists are in charge. As energy secretary, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Chu has transformed his office into a bully pulpit, pushing for the creation of government incentives for private scientific research into alternative energy sources. In this way, he hopes to use the profit motive to encourage the development of the next generation of energy-saving technology, sparking what he calls a "new Industrial Revolution." Holdren, a nuclear physicist by training, directs the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy and shares his boss's passion for arms control. He has aggressively supported a reduction of the United States' nuclear stockpiles and has said the elimination of nuclear weapons "is not only a practical but a legal and moral necessity."

35. Nicholas Stern

for figuring out the costs of climate change and the politics of a solution.

climate Economist | London School of Economics | Britain

Studious, bespectacled, and self-effacing, Stern is not exactly the climate-change movement's Bono. But perhaps this is precisely the point -- the cold, hard logic of his groundbreaking 2006 "Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change" dragged the issue out from the preserve of ecowarriors and into the global mainstream. In a government-sponsored study, Stern and his team concluded that decisive early action would cost humanity far less in the long run than allowing rising sea levels, dwindling freshwater supplies, and shrinking habitats to reduce global GDP a projected 20 percent. These days, Stern is focusing on how to build the international alliances needed to find workable ways forward. His new book, The Global Deal, adds an increasingly rare element to the global climate debate: optimism. As he puts it, "Collective pessimism about our inability to act will deliver an inability to act."

"What's the alternative to optimism? Unless we act as if we can sort this out, you might as well just get a hat and some suntan lotion and write a letter of apology to your grandchildren." --Stern, speech at the London School of Economics, April 21, 2009

36. Paul Collier

for showing how the world's bad guys are keeping the bottom billion down.

Economist | Oxford University | Britain

Collier knows what makes dictators tick. He knows how they manipulate elections, knock off opponents, and sign resource-exploitation deals that bring revenues to their pockets rather than their people. And that's precisely why the autocrats of the world should fear his 2009 book, War, Guns, and Votes, which musters impressive data to show exactly how the emperors have no clothes, building on his remarkable 2007 book on the world's worst-off, Bottom Billion. Elections as heralds of democracy? Nope, they often allow dictators to buy just enough votes to stay in power. Aid can save the world? Not even close; it will take international intervention to provide security first. The world's 60 smallest, most impoverished ex-colonial countries "will never tap their vast reservoir of frustrated human potential unless the international community, at least for a time, supplies basic public goods that go beyond the typical aid agenda."

37. Fareed Zakaria

for defining the limits of American power and convening the smartest public conversation about it.

Editor | Newsweek International | New York

Zakaria has emerged as perhaps the most public exponent of the view that the United States has entered a period of inexorable global decline. For many, the message of Zakaria's 2008 book, The Post-American World, rings more true than ever in the wake of the year's economic calamity. Zakaria argued that Americans must recognize that the emergence of new global powers China, India, and Russia will not necessarily knock America off its global pedestal. However, even if the United States remains the world's most powerful country, its leaders must fundamentally reimagine the country's international role. "We know how to handle a recession," Zakaria says. "But how do we handle the rise of the rest?" Zakaria also hosts arguably the most influential weekly salon on U.S. strategy: his CNN show GPS, with such heavy-hitting guests as Gordon Brown (No. 74), Timothy Geithner, and Wen Jiabao in lively debate on everything from troop levels to international monetary policy.

38. George Soros

for showing us that billionaires can be thinkers, too.

Philanthropist and investor | Open Society Institute | New York

Over the course of 40 years, Budapest native George Soros built a multibillion-dollar fortune speculating on global currency markets. A philosophy and politics aficionado, Soros has used his wealth to bankroll democratic revolutions in Central and Eastern Europe and promote institutional reforms around the world. Lately, though, Soros has committed himself not just to earning capital and giving it away, but to reforming capitalism from the inside out. To this end, he has launched a think tank to foster fresh research, the Institute for New Economic Thinking, saying that "the entire edifice of global financial markets has been erected on the false premise that markets can be left to their own devices. We must find a new paradigm." Most recently, Soros has started pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into green technology, a sure sign of a financial opportunity -- or another bubble-on the horizon.

39. Jeffrey D. Sachs

for being the global poor's most persistent advocate among the global elite.

economist | Columbia University | New York

As with his colleague and sometime rival William Easterly (tied at No. 39), the financial crisis had Sachs even more worried about the poor than usual. He had just spent the last decade trying to convince rich countries to devote a solid chunk of their GDP to bringing about The End of Poverty, as one of his recent book titles proclaims. As special advisor to then-U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan (No. 30), Sachs was instrumental in drafting the Millennium Development Goals, the eight broad poverty-reduction targets the United Nations declared in 2000. In the years since, he has led the U.N. Millennium Project to develop model "villages" across Africa where all eight areas are addressed in tandem. Will the downturn derail his work? In 2009, Sachs fought to keep global leaders honest even in the face of fiscal hardship. After this April's G-20 summit he wrote, "The poorest countries, by and large, were not in the room. As usual, their plight came far behind the immediate concerns of the high-income and middle-income countries."

39. William Easterly

for raising inconvenient truths about the foreign-aid business.

Economist | New York University | New York

After a half-century of what Easterly sees as a failed experiment in international aid, the world risks losing all the hard-won progress it has made in the turmoil of the financial crisis. But not if this outspoken economist and cranky aid skeptic has anything to do with it. After finishing a 16-year stint at the World Bank, Easterly has made it his life's work to puncture holes in what he calls the "ideology of development." His voluminous commentary -- including his explosive 2006 book The White Man's Burden, a seemingly endless spat with nemesis Jeffrey Sachs, and now a blog and prolific Twitter feed -- is necessary reading for those who care about the world's belated and frequently disastrous efforts to help its most benighted citizens.

Best idea: Understanding political motivations for ideas in development economics.

ONLY THE MALAYS & THE MAMAKS esp MAHAMAMAK

written by Ghifarix, December 02, 2009 22:48:13

Anwar Ibrahim never nominated himself and like it or not, indeed there are undesirables in the list but what has it to do with Anwar. There's a vast world out there and we are a part of it.

The same accolade was bestowed on Nelson Mandela Martin Luther King Olof Palm Desmond Tutu though few, they were the few great personalities amongst packs of wolves. Always remember this; Shaiton promised to wait on the straight path not the crocked path where the ilk like Altantuya Imam Ali and Anwar murderers accusers and slanderers much like Ariel Sharon- to cut a long story short; UMNO/BN finds comfort.
For argument sake; the award is about the impact and personality not necessarily the character you dumb ass. Is it Anwar's fault that Dick Cheney , David Petraeus are Muslims worst nightmare?
Mahathir and Badawi agreed with the Washington that they invade Muslim lands and permit them to fuel and stock up their war ships at Malaysian ports. Afterwards still paid bribes to secure meeting with George Shoe Bush.
You critique Anwar for his fraternising with US officials. How many UMNO/BN politicians send their kids and kin to European and US schools? How many live and do business in those countries.
Who invited the Israeli cricket team to Malaysia and send the FRU to kick our ass while we demonstrate- in fact who broke the law by inviting them here.
It was Anwar who tipped us off the tour organised by the palace and some spineless cabinet Ministers.

many of you Malays will beg mercy Yaumul Qiama for partaking in the slander and subsequent miss-treatment of Anwar Ibrahim and his family. We are a bunch of hypocrites knowingly believing and supporting lies and liars merely to sponge and short-cut our way through life; we Malays have sold our souls even when we know that Allah is displeased with our connivance with UMNO.
Now lets look at ourselves; our dirty deed have transcend to another level(excuse) racism.

We call the name of Allah and we supplement prayers on the holy Prophet PBUH every day as though was to consume a glass of water to cool the sinful fire from our slander we so easily believe.

What good is this religion if we don't hold to its precepts? what are the conditions laid down for the allegations of sodomy illicit sex etc? Yet we dare threaten the Chinese and Indians about our beloved Islamic faith. As I recalled; No Chinaman ever accuse Anwar of sodomy, no Indian woman ever accuse Wan Aziza of sleeping with a rapist.
It was we the MALAYS throwing caution and the fear of ALLAH behind us in exchange for easy street, post, hotel & travel vouchers, Mahathir Mohamad became our new messiah.
After all he managed the tallest erection in the world therefore anything he said was divine, if not halal macro. Allah will expose us for the soft yet devious people we have become. Someday we will apologise to Anwar Ibrahim insha ALLAH otherwise we Malaysia will never get things right.Hypocrites.

THAT BLOODY BTN AGAIN

by abdul rahman lim - 26 minutes ago

For every occassion on the 31st of August, we emphasise Malaysia as a diverse country and the only one in the world with all different races eating and working and laughing and playing together. On TV and the media on this particularly yearly event, we have foreigners who would talk so much about the diversity in culture, religion, race and all those beautiful words to decribe Malaysia. Millions are spend yearly to mark and celebrate this beautiful event. Alas, all have gone to waste. Here in BTN we have these nut heads doing the reverse and utilizing millions of the rakyat's money. "Melayu senang lupa" should be highlighted and broadcast everyday to instill this proverb to the audience at large. Hopefully, with God's Blessing, we shall conquer as ONE. The Government of today still ignore the fact that as years go by, "patriotism" had severely diminished. Owners of buildings have been reluctant to fly the Jalur Gemilang. Vehicle owners are ashamed of fixing the miniature flag. WHY?
