(The Star) PETALING JAYA: A stern warning will be given to two Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) lecturers for plagiarising materials from the Internet to produce a guide book.

UPM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Nik Mustapha R. Abdullah said this warning would also be included in their service records, which would affect their promotion.

“The management decided to take this action following advice from the legal department that the two be given very stern warnings,” he said when contacted.

Prof Dr Nik Mustapha said the university viewed the case seriously and did not condone it.

“No one will be suspended but they have to return any royalty received,” he said.

He said the guide books would be removed from the (university’s) shelves immediately.

He was commenting on a news report that two UPM lecturers had plagiarised materials to produce a guide book on writing effective resumes for management students.

Prof Dr Nik Mustapha said the legal department had made suggestions to the management on the disciplinary action to be taken after personally meeting the authors.

“The junior author, who recently completed her PhD, said that since the source was from the Internet, she thought the information was in the public domain and as such did not cite the article,” he said.

Prof Dr Nik Mustapha said the senior author admitted to the legal team that the manuscript looked all right to him, not realising that it was taken from another work.

“Since this is a guide book, we decided that the punishment was reasonable,” he said.

Prof Dr Nik Mustapha said that the two authors have apologised for their ignorance, adding that the plagiarism did not affect UPM undergraduates as the work was not a textbook.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin when contacted said the ministry viewed the matter seriously. “We will leave it to the university to conduct an investigation and take action,” he said.

Nothing new - it's an open secret that this is how we've been getting our kangkungs at our Unis all these years under our BN's politicized education policy, what!
Satu Lagi Projek Kangkung BN ....

In response to the Ministry's comment that they view the matter seriously, shall we seriously sing our National anthem "Mamula Moon" to honour these two plagiarists?

Let's face it. UPM is in a quagmire here. The fact was known for close to two years; but heavily denied and suppressed by UPM. Only when certain things hit the fan, the VC had to become active.
He knows all too well that he could kiss the Research University status of his university good-bye if plagiarism was not condoned.

Wow...just goes to show how far the education standard here has fallen. Doctorate student, but does not know how to identify if a particular reference is public domain. How on earth did she earn he PhD? Maybe her thesis deserve further scrutiny?

Browsing through a thesis Master of Engineering by a UTM titled "COMPARISON OF GUIDELINES ON FORENSIC ENGINEERING PRACTICES" showed the standard of the supervisors and students. An engineering tehsis is just like a form 5 history book. ZTo me the supervisors are rally "kangkong" Associate Prof. and a lecturer. I dont know how they award the M.Eng to this student. Its no bloody standard.

What a lame excuse? Ignorant? The first thing we learn in high school is Do Not Copy the work of others unless you quote and reference your source. For a lecturer not to know this very basic leaves a lot to be desired on the standard of education in UPM. More plagiarists will surface as this is only the tip of the iceberg!

This is shameful SHIT...surely lots more of this in UMNO camps...most of their YBs bought their Degree and goldplated them and hung them in their UMNO offices...
Probably the job of the same VC in UPM....
What a shame...

"A stern warning will be given to two Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) lecturers for plagiarising materials from the Internet to produce a guide book."

Is this the standard set in our universiti that it is alright for plagiarism, they all should be sack from their job or ask to resign. If not they will set an excellent example for all future graduates of the uni. Guess and hate to say the 2 are malays and I don't mean to be racist. No wonder our uni world ranking is below 500!!!!! And no wonder over 100 000s of local graduates are walking the chow kit street.

Typical malaysian reaction, cover up and minimum punishment. phD but don't that you need to give credit or acknowledge for any body of work be it public domain or not.The lecturers should be telling this to students and yet they are the one doing it,plagiarism. Book not public domain ka? Internet is?

UMNO culture is everywhere now.

Claiming Ignorance ? What a way to be excused. Right from day 1 in any higher institution of learning, all students are told about the consequences of plagiarism. What more it is conducted by lecturers. No wonder we have rampant corruption in every nook.
